Bright Ideas for Age Appropriate Chores for Kids

Posted on 08-27-2015

ChoresAsking your child to help out with the chores is about more than just getting the house clean. Assigning chores teaches your child to prioritize, be responsible and work as part of a team. Chores are also a great way to build self-esteem by taking pride in a job well-done.

When considering chores for your child, it is important to think about age-appropriateness. Chores for kids should take some effort, but not be overly frustrating for your child to complete. As your child grows, so will her responsibilities. Here are some ideas for age appropriate chores:

Ages 2-3

  • Pick up toys.
  • Get dressed and put on socks and shoes.
  • Put dirty clothes in the hamper.
  • Help dust.
  • Help move clothes from washer to dryer.

Ages 4-5

  • Empty wastebaskets.
  • Set the table.
  • Water plants.
  • Help sort laundry.
  • Help feed pets.

Ages 6-7

  • Sweep floors.
  • Fold laundry.
  • Vacuum.
  • Assist with meal preparation.

Ages 9-11

  • Wipe down counters.
  • Clean mirrors.
  • Take garbage to the curb.
  • Make simple meals.
  • Wash and dry clothes.
  • Load dishwasher.

Ages 12 and Older

  • Clean tubs and showers.
  • Rake the lawn.
  • Wash dishes.
  • Iron clothes.

Talk to your child and allow for input. Developing a chore list together requires teamwork, which builds positive character traits.
